Agreements & Prices

RADAR is subject to a service agreement between your institution and FIZ Karlsruhe. Each RADAR variant - RADAR Cloud, RADAR Hybrid and RADAR Local - is based on a different service agreement. Usually, one contract per institution is sufficient, as there are no restrictions regarding the number of users, work spaces or data volumes. For all three variants, usage is invoiced annually. For contractual reasons, our offers RADAR Cloud and RADAR Hybrid are currently still limited to publicly funded research institutions and universities in Germany.

RADAR Cloud

For using institutions:

RADAR Hybrid

Significant contractual differences compared to RADAR Cloud:

• the using institution itself is responsible for the data backup of the research data archived or published via RADAR Hybrid in the provided permanent storage provided,
• FIZ Karlsruhe is not liable for data losses or changes that are due to deficiencies in the data archive made available by the institution,
• FIZ Karlsruhe and the using institution assume joint responsibility for personal data in the metadata on research data in accordance with Section 26 of the German Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This is regulated in an annex to the service contractagreement.

RADAR Local

Significant contractual differences compared to RADAR Cloud:

• The provider of RADAR Local within the terms of the German Telemedia Act (Telemediengesetz) and the responsible party within the terms of the German GDPR (DS-GVO) is the using institution. Accordingly, the legal notices, data protection notice and terms of use for data providers and data users are accordingly provided by the institution.
• FIZ Karlsruhe is a processor within the terms of the German GDPR (DS-GVO). In addition to the service agreement, both parties conclude a contract processing agreement in accordance with Art. 28 GDPR.
• The using institution itself is responsible for the data backups, both for the data in the temporary storage stored temporarily and for the research data archived or published via RADAR Local in the local data archive.
• FIZ Karlsruhe is not liable for data losses or changes that are due to defects in the (virtual) machines devices and the temporary and permanent storage systems provided by the institution.
• the offer can also be used by institutions outside Germany.

RADAR Cloud

The costs for using RADAR Cloud consist of a basic fee and a usage-dependent fee. These will be billed to you at the beginning of each calendar year for the previous year. Alternatively, prepayments for the usage-based fee are also possible. 

The user-dependent fee may consist of three components:

• Fee for data archiving: Either one-off payment for the holding period of 10 years or annual payment within the selected retention period (5 / 10 / 15 years). You choose the billing mode when you sign the service agreement. The costs are based in each case on the volume of data archived in the previous year. Alternatively, storage volume for data archiving can also be ordered by prepayment. In the event of termination, RADAR Cloud will cease archiving the data at the end of the contract (in case of annual payment). Your institution can, of course, download the data from RADAR beforehand and store it with another service provider.
• Fee for data publication: Paid as a one-off payment. The costs are based on the volume of data published in the previous year. Alternatively, storage volume for data publication can also be ordered by prepayment. RADAR Cloud guarantees reliable storage of published data for at least 25 years, even if the contract is terminate.
• Fee for temporary storage: The basic fee includes - sufficient for most purposes - 200 GB of temporary storage for processing and reviewing research data. If required, additional temporary storage volume can be provided for a fee.

If you archive or publish more than 50 terabytes with RADAR Cloud, we will reduce the usagee-dependent prices while at the same time increasing the basic fee. The discounted prices then apply to the entire data volume stored. We automatically calculate the prices from the moment they are cheaper for your institution.

RADAR Hybrid

Billing is done annually, and a flat rate is charged. Since there are no volume-based storage or publication costs, the costs for your institution are fixed. We will provide you with pricing information on request.

RADAR Local

Billing is done annually, and a flat rate is charged. Since there are no volume-based storage or publication costs, the costs for your institution are fixed. If an additional optional test system is used, the flat fee increases by 50%. For the initial setup of both the productive RADAR Local instance and the optional test system, a one-time initial setup fee is charged at the time of the start of the agreement.
