RADAR4Culture is a reliable and low-threshold publishing service for research data on tangible and intangible cultural assets based on our established data repository RADAR.

With RADAR4Culture, we enable you to publish your digital research data easily, securely, and free of charge. At the same time, we offer the scientific community access to these research data publications according to the FAIR criteria (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable). RADAR4Culture thus makes an important contribution to the improved availability, sustainable preservation, and independent publication capability of digital research data in the field of tangible and intangible cultural assets.

The tailor-made offer for researchers in the field of cultural heritage was developed within the framework of our participation in the consortium for research data on tangible and intangible cultural assets (NFDI4Culture). FIZ Karlsruhe - Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure has been represented as a co-applicant n NFDI4Culture right from the start of the first funding round of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in 2020.

The NFDI4Culture consortium consists of a network of nine co-applicant and 52 participating institutions. It focuses on the cross-disciplinary discoverability and accessibility as well as the long-term preservation and continuous maintenance of the very heterogeneous data from the entire field of culture and the related humanities. This includes 2D digital reproductions of paintings, photographs and drawings as well as digital 3D models of culturally and historically important buildings, monuments or audiovisual data of music, film and stage performances. Up to now, there has been no coordinated effort on a national level to secure, standardize and make available research data from the cultural heritage on a sustainable basis. NFDI4Culture aims to fill this gap. The research activities of the consortium comprise a total of six task areas, also with the participation of FIZ Karlsruhe. The consortium is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) - 441958017.

The NFDI aims to build on existing infrastructures and services, whenever possible, and to make them interoperable. In this context, discipline-specific repositories for the publication and long-term archiving of digital research data are of particular importance to the scientific communities. Analyses within NFDI4Culture revealed an additional need that can be met by a generically oriented data repository such as RADAR. RADAR4Culture thus complements the existing portfolio of specialist repositories in the field of cultural heritage.

With RADAR4Culture, you can upload the research data from your studies and projects via a web portal, compile them into data sets, describe them with metadata, have them peer-reviewed, and make them permanently available to the public.

You can publish all data types and formats with RADAR4Culture. The service is therefore suitable for research data on all tangible and intangible cultural assets. You can publish data sets

• for which there is no tailor-made, specialist repository yet, or
• that contain such a large variety of data types that they do not fit into one single established repository, or
• that you would like to link to a data set in a specialist repository via DOI.

As a researcher you do not have to pay any usage or publication fees for RADAR4Culture. You can also use RADAR4Culture independently of your institutional affiliation.

RADAR4Culture is based on the well-established research data repository RADAR Cloud, which was developed as part of a DFG project. Since 2017, RADAR has been operated by FIZ Karlsruhe - Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure on a secure cloud platform. Research data is stored in three copies at different locations in the data centers of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and TU Dresden. RADAR is operated exclusively in Germany and according to German law and is of course GDPR-compliant.

With RADAR4Culture, FIZ Karlsruhe provides the culture community with a free storage quota for the publication of research data and takes over the fees for the DOI registration. The costs are borne by FIZ Karlsruhe from its funding budget for NFDI4Culture.

Please note:

• The offer is aimed exclusively at researchers at publicly funded research institutions and (art) universities as well as non-commercial academies, galleries, libraries, archives and museums in Germany.
• Currently, the use of RADAR4Culture is limited to a maximum of 10 GB storage volume per research project.
• Before you can publish data in RADAR4Culture, you have to agree to the RADAR4Culture License and User Instructions (PDF).
