Import of GitLab / GitHub repositories

Transfer your software versions and projects directly from GitLab or GitHub to RADAR with just a few clicks. This makes your Git content clearly citable, linkable and long-term available.

GitLab and GitHub are two of the most popular platforms for version control, collaboration and the publication of software. Research projects often store code, data and documentation there. You can integrate GitLab / GitHub content directly into RADAR with just a few clicks - no more manual uploading. The Git import is therefore particularly suitable for projects that are based on continuous software development or where data is generated and managed using software.

The integration of GitLab / GitHub and RADAR allows you to assign DOIs for specific versions of your Git repository. This makes your software versions and projects clearly citable and allows you to easily link them to other digital resources or research data. By storing and publishing in RADAR, you also ensure that your content remains available in the long term - a benefit which GitLab and GitHub do not provide on their own.

RADAR supports the import from both public and private GitLab / GitHub repositories. A token must be entered for the latter. Either the standard branch or an individual branch can be imported.

Limitations in the beta version:

The Git import function is currently in the beta phase. Some functions are not yet supported. Known so far are:

Symbolic links: These are not processed during import.
Git Large File Storage (LFS): Files that are managed via Git LFS cannot be imported.

We are actively working on further improving the import and welcome feedback on the beta version.

Would you like to create datasets using GitLab/GitHub import?

In order to use the Git import, it must first be activated by FIZ Karlsruhe. This activation can be done either for your entire RADAR contract or for specific workspaces. The additional table tab “GitLab/GitHub repository BETA” is then available for users to create datasets.
